Dr. Bücker is scientifically active at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany. He investigates infectious issues in the gastrointestinal tract in terms of transport and barrier function of the intestinal epithelium as well as mucosal inflammatory processes in the university laboratory of the Clinical Physiology / Nutritional Medicine in the Medical Department of Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases, and Rheumatology. He is a member of the doctoral committee of the Charité and the graduate school DFG 2318 with different topics on tight junction structure and function.
As a biologist with a background in physiology and microbiology, his epithelial research also takes a translational approach to issues in clinical and basic research, e.g. drug testing in response to Campylobacter jejuni infection.
At the beginning of his career, the conditions of Helicobacter pylori colonization in the stomach were described, and then in the postdoc phase, the mechanisms of diarrheal diseases by Aliarcobacter butzleri, Aeromonas hydrophila, and Escherichia coli and other bacterial pathogens of the gastrointestinal tract such as Yersinia enterocolitica or several Campylobacter spp. were characterized. Virus infections and their gastrointestinal passage has also been studied.
